Ashley Phillips is Native American .... Originally from Nebraska, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue a PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. He never completed that degree, however, because he became too involved in community work. For many years he was a very successful fundraiser for the Native American Health Center in Oakland, where he was instrumental in getting the funding for that organization to construct its ambitious and beautiful new center on International Blvd..
